Ronald Duane Proffer passed away with Parkinson’s January 21, 2024. He was born June 10, 1942 in San Diego, CA.
Starting in WWII, Ron’s father was in Navy Air and the family was stationed at Air Bases in Maryland, Hawaii, Newfoundland and Washington. From a boy, Ron loved Airplanes, Jets, Helicopters, Tanks and especially all things WWII. He loved hunting, fishing and long range target shooting so he always found local jobs to support his hobbies.
Ron enlisted in the USAF after high school and was stationed at Castle AFB near Merced, CA. There he earned a Silver Star for recovering a weapon that was involved in an accident. They told him he could be transferred wherever he wanted and he chose Southeast Asia.
When his enlistment was up he returned to California and worked for AT&T as a Communications Technician. This career of 30 years in San Francisco and Sacramento allowed him to support his hobbies too. He spent many hours at shooting ranges: Coyote Point, Lake Chabot and Sacramento Valley Shooting Center in Ione.
In Sacramento he found two fellowships: Sons of the American Revolution and Alcoholics Anonymous. He made many wonderful friends in both.
Ron is survived by his wife, Patty. They were married for 46 happy years. They had one son, Michael, who died in 1997.
He will be missed by many for his sense of humor and his straight forward opinions and comments. Friends are invited to attend a Celebration of life on Saturday, February 17, 2024 at 12 noon, at the Serbian Orthodox Church Hall, 7777 Sunset Avenue, Fair Oaks, CA 95628.
