It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Richard Allaye-Chan, JR. of Sacramento, California. He was tragically taken from us in an automobile accident on December 18, 2024. Richard was 57 years old. A devoted husband to Anne Allaye-Chan, a loving father to his treasured daughters, Claire and Sophie, and a beloved brother to his sisters: Laura Chan-Lee (Steve), Michelle Chan-Ponder (Danny) and Denise Allaye-Chan (Newman). Richard was born in Hong Kong to Dr. Richard Allaye-Chan and Beatrice Ann Allaye-Chan. Immigrating to Sacramento in 1968, Richard was raised in Fair Oaks and attended St. Mel’s School and Jesuit High (Class of ’85). He graduated from the University of the Pacific in 1989 and McGeorge School of Law in 1994. Richard was a distinguished lawyer for over 30 years. He was known for his unwavering dedication to justice and his clients. His career was marked by integrity, intelligence and a genuine care to those he served.
Richard was a protective and encouraging husband, father, brother and uncle. He cherished his brothers by marriage Steven Lee, M.D. and Danny Ponder. Proud uncle to his nephews: Alex, Aidan and Andrew Lee and his nieces: Charlotte and Amelia Ponder. He had a wide social circle and was a lifelong and dedicated friend to many. He treasured the close friendships created over the years. He was passionate about his family and friends.
His happiest moments were spent with family and friends on the ski slopes, boating on the water and in the outdoors with his loyal dog, Oliver “Ollie girl”. He was incredibly generous to those around him. Never shying away from offering his advice, Richard would drop anything to help someone in need. He had an incredible way of constantly keeping in contact with people through daily phone calls, texts or personal visits. He will be remembered for his quick wit and his “cheeky” behavior. Thankfully, Richard thoroughly documented his life with his daily photos and video messages, which will be enjoyed for years to come.
Richard is also survived by his mother-in-law, Sherri Martin Mata and her husband, Mike Mata. Preceded in death by his parents and father-in-law, Gary Martin.
A service to celebrate Richard’s life will be held on January 3, 2025, starting at 10 A.M. at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 3159 Land Park Drive, Sacramento, CA. Friends and family are invited to come together to remember his remarkable life. In lieu of flowers an educational fund has been established for his daughters, contributions can be directed to https://www.givesendgo.com/richardallayechan or donations can be made to your favorite charity.
Though he is no longer with us, Richard’s memory will live on in the hearts of those he touched. His playful spirit, advice and discourse will be truly missed.
