Marie Bravou

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Marie Bravou who departed this life on December 14, 2024, peacefully at home.

Marie was born on June 24, 1933 in Velo, Corinth, Greece. She came to the United States in 1961 to pursue the “American Dream”. Upon her arrival, Marie settled with her sister, Athanasia; brother-in-law, George; and their two children, Rula and John.

“I had no experience with the English language, so I enrolled in the Fremont School.” She excelled in her studies and was encouraged by her instructors to enroll in Sacramento State University where she attended from 1963-1966, earning her bachelor’s degree in education. Later Marie would earn her master’s degree.

Marie went on to teach at Orville Wright School, Winterstein School and Sierra Oaks School where she was honored to enrich the lives of so many students including those in the Greek Community. She was fortunate to maintain lifelong friendships with some of her students, even attending their weddings and continuing to interact with them as they grew in the Greek Community.

Marie never left her educational roots and continued to offer private tutoring to students in the Greek Community who needed extra help with reading and writing. Generous with her time, Marie was an avid volunteer and was the President of the Daughters of Penelope Artemis Chapter 5 and then went on to lead the scholarship program. Additionally, Marie was involved in the Ladies Philoptochos Society, the Senior League and joyfully volunteered at the Greek Food Festival for over 20 years.

Marie is now reunited with her sister, Athanasia Manikas and her brother Haralambos Bravou. She is survived by her loving niece, Exaveria (Rula); nephew, John (Gina); great-nephews: George and Antonios; and her niece in Greece, Eleni Bravou and her children.

A funeral Service will be held at the Greek Orthodox Church of the Annunciation in Sacramento, 616 Alhambra Blvd, Sacramento on Friday, December 20th at 10:30 AM. The interment will take place at East Lawn Memorial Park at 12 PM following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church Memorial Fund in memory of Marie Bravou.
