John F. Mcgrath

John Francis McGrath, Jr., loving husband, father, stepfather and grandfather passed away peacefully at home on January 15, 2023.  He was born November 7, 1942, in Kansas City, MO, to John F., Sr. and Helen Fisher McGrath. John is survived by his beloved wife, Sandie McGrath; daughters Kimzey (Patrick Danford) and Katy McGrath and their mother, former wife Carole Kimzey; stepsons Dean, Michael (Colby) and Rob Osmundson; grandchildren Peyton, Barrett and Kate Osmondson,  and Jesse McGrath; his siblings Judy Rainey, Jeanne Vergillio (Gary), Kevin McGrath; sister and brother-in-law Marilyn and Bernie Rao; and numerous nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Tom McGrath and brother-in-law Ken Rainey, Sr. John began his professional career in the banking industry, which spanned over 55 years.  In 1963, after graduating from Rockhurst University, he moved to California, where he began work at Lloyd's Bank of California.   In 1983 he established Sacramento First National Bank as President/CEO.  Over the next 25 years, he was recruited to bring several troubled banks out of default and succeeded in making them profitable.  He was actively involved in the Sacramento community; he chaired the Sacramento Chapter of the March of Dimes, served on the Sacramento County Grand Jury, was past president of Del Paso Country Club and a member of the Sutter and Grandfathers Clubs.

John had many loves and passions; he enjoyed spending time with family and friends, playing cards, golfing with his many golfer buddies, and working on his many outdoor "projects," a favorite part of which was visiting with neighbors walking by.   At Christmas time he took great pride in personally putting up the outside lights, which, per his tradition, were always turned on Thanksgiving night.  He will be fondly remembered by all for his wonderfully wry sense of humor, telling jokes and witty puns at every opportunity.  A Celebration of Life Memorial Mass will be held at Our Lady of Assumption Church in Carmichael on February 11, 2023, at 1:00 p.m.   In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 7023, Merrifield, VA  22116-7023.
