Of Sacramento, CA passed away on January 15, 2024. Aged 95 years, he is survived by his wife Kim Ok-Cha, Daughter Chin-Hae (Steve) Papa of Tucson, AZ; Son Chae-Su (Pil-Sun) Yi of Boise, ID; Daughter Genny (Richard) Hauglie of Wylie, TX; and Son Chae-Sun (Bo Young) Yi of Roseville, CA; 9 grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild, one brother, Huenduk and one sister, Sooni. Preceded in death by parents Yi, Tong Kun and No, Kwi Nyo, Sisters Sandy Pinkston, Betty Perry, and Yi, Sun I.
Born Nov. 16, 1928 in Kunsan, Korea. As a teenager Hyong was captured by the Japanese in World War II, taken to Japan, and forced to work in the Involuntary Labor Camp. He later escaped and successfully returned to Korea. As a young man he fought in the Korean war where he was injured in battle and earned the Purple Heart. He worked in the commissary on the US Air Force Base in Kunsan and emigrated to the US with his family in 1987. In 1992 he started a Korean grocery store in the Sacramento area that is still in business today. Hyong became a Christian and was an active member of the Sacramento Korean Baptist Church. He was an avid baseball fan and loved bowling. He was very disciplined and kept himself in excellent physical and mental shape, even still driving at 95! He was loved and will be greatly missed by his family.
A memorial service/celebration of life will be held on February 3 at 10:30am at the Sacramento Korean Baptist Church in Fair Oaks, CA.
