Gladys M. Avara (née Briare)

Sacramento, California - Gladys died peacefully at a care home on May 5, 2021 with her beloved dog, Jimmy, by her side. She was 95 years old. A resident of Sacramento for 60 years, she had continued to live independently in the same home she shared with the love of her life, James L. Avara, after his death in 1968. Gladys was born in Stockton, CA, the second of four children, to Gladys L. (Fay) and George S. Briare. She started working at age 16, worked as a secretary for several years for Continental Can Company of Stockton and over 30 years for PG&E, Sacramento Division. She married Jim Avara in 1947 and later moved to Sacramento. Gladys was a kind, fashionable, fiercely independent and private woman with a great circle of cherished friends and lifetime friendships. In addition to her loving husband, Jim, Gladys was preceded in death by her brothers Robert S. Briare, Frank R. Briare and George E. Briare; devoted friends Evelyn Eggett and Lena Davia. The family gives thanks and appreciation to Gladys's dear friend Joyce Kazama, for helping her navigate the final few years of her life, Service will be held Friday, May 14, 11:00 am at Gormley & Sons Funeral Chapel, Sacramento. Burial at Calvary Cemetery, Citrus Heights. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the ASPCA.
