Douglas Edward Watts

Douglas Edward Watts, Esq., passed away on March 3, 2023, in Sacramento, California, at the age of 54.

Doug was born on May 1, 1968, in San Francisco, California. He attended Bishop O'Dowd High School in Oakland, where he excelled as the varsity football quarterback. He was an excellent student and majored in English at UC Davis. His passion for sports and writing led him to a career as a sportswriter at a newspaper in Idaho after college. However, his ambitions took him further, and he pursued a legal career by attending law school at the University of Idaho.

After working at several law firms in the Bay Area, Doug realized his dream of establishing his own practice. He founded Watts Law Firm in Folsom, California, an achievement he took immense pride in. His dedication to his clients extended beyond legal counsel—he built lasting relationships and was known not just as an attorney but as a trusted friend. Doug was a member of both the California State Bar and had recently become a member of the Texas State Bar.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Doug embraced life with enthusiasm and adventure. He traveled extensively around the world. His love for aviation led him to fly airplanes, while his passion for water and snow sports kept him active on lakes and mountains alike. An avid golfer, Doug quickly mastered the game and formed friendships with nearly everyone he played alongside. His warmth and charisma made him unforgettable to those who crossed his path.

Doug is survived by his beloved wife of seven years, Lana Watts; his father, Richard Watts; his stepmother, Cande Watts; and his brother, Michael Watts. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews and brothers and sisters-in-law who will cherish his memory. He was predeceased by his mother, Judy Garber, his father-in-law, Travis Wickliffe, and his brother-in-law Jeff Wickliffe.

A service to honor Doug’s life was held on May 12, 2023, at Sacred Heart Church of Jesus in Sacramento, California. A reception followed at Haggin Oaks Golf Complex in Sacramento.

The family set up an endowed scholarship in his name: The Douglas E. Watts ’86 Scholarship. If you would like to donate toward his fund in his memory, please go to bishopodowd.org/watts.

The strength and courage Doug displayed in fighting anxiety and depression inspired all who knew him. Sadly, his pain became overwhelming. Doug will always be remembered for the laughter and affection he showed family, friends, strangers. His email signature line included the following anonymous quote: “The true measure of a man is how he treats those who can do nothing for him… The Poor; the Downtrodden; the Defeated. Would that I be remembered as such a man.”

Let Doug’s light shine on through yourselves. Be that friend to others, generous in your time, money, and laughter. Doug would love that. Until we meet again. We love and miss you, Dougie.
