Bartley W. Cavanaugh Jr.

December 28, 1930-August 1, 2020

Join us in remembering Bartley W. Cavanaugh, Jr., who passed away on Saturday, August 1st after a brief illness. Born into a family of direct descendants of Irish immigrants that first settled in Sacramento in the 1840’s, he was the son of Bartley W. Cavanaugh, Sr. and Mildred Jacobs Cavanaugh. Bart was born and died at 40th and J Streets in Sacramento. Bart attended Sacramento public schools, graduating from McClatchy High in 1948. Next, he attended University of Santa Clara School of Business, graduating in 1952. Later that year he married the lovely Barbara Bauman and they began their family.  Soon, Bart grew disenchanted with the world of business and in 1957 he enrolled in the University of California, Hastings School of Law. As soon as he graduated and passed the bar, he and Barbara moved their growing family back to the McKinley Park area of Sacramento. Upon his return to Sacramento he began a 44-year legal career, first as a Deputy in the District Attorney’s office, then in private practice, and finally as a sole practitioner. Bart’s greatest pleasures, in addition to his family, were in his associations with a modest circle of good friends in the pursuit of his lifelong interests in the game of golf, jazz music, and bird hunting. Particularly indelible memories were created with his family on annual vacations to Lake Tahoe. Bart was predeceased by his wife Barbara and his sister Margaret. He is survived by his eight children, Bart III, Katie, Mary, Maggie, John, Ann, Joe, and Dan, his sisters Mildred and Florence, and his grandchildren, Abby, Jack, Galen, Mara, Caitlin, and Kyla. We will remember him always as a man of the highest integrity, keen wit, and unparalleled loyalty and intelligence. He was an ept fellow. Bart’s family is planning a gathering to be announced at a later date in celebration of a life well lived.
