Barry S. Martin

Retired Judge Barry S. Martin of Sacramento California died on February 26, 2025. He was born in Rochester, New York on November 30, 1937 the oldest of two children to C. Stuart and Dorothee Devine Martin. He was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate from the College of William & Mary in 1959. Barry continued his studies of colonial American history at the University of Washington (UW) where he earned a Masters Degree. While working as a UW Teaching Assistant, Barry met the love of his life Carolyn Beucler. Seven months after their first date, they married and enjoyed 63 very happy years together.

Barry moved to California in 1961 and served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army. In 1968 he graduated from the University of California at Berkeley School of Law and moved to Sacramento. He enjoyed a distinguished legal career in private practice and as a Staff Attorney at the California Air Resources Board. He worked in the Clinic guiding students in court cases at McGeorge School of Law and authored more than two dozen articles on legal ethics for the State Bar Journal. In 1993 he was appointed an Administrative Law Judge for the United States Social Security Administration and retired in 2003.

Barry’s interest in sports translated into 11 years as his children’s soccer coach, and as “Commissioner of Barry’s Baseball Wall of Fame”. He and Carolyn hosted fun baseball themed parties with Barry wearing a SF Seals uniform and regaling the guests with stories of baseball greats.

After retirement Barry fulfilled his goals of scholarly pursuits and travel. He researched and authored two books: Forgotten Aviator, about the exploits of a pilot in the early days of aviation, and Bob Davies: A Basketball Legend, the biography of an early NBA superstar. Barry enjoyed vacationing in Hawaii, Europe, and taking trips to the east coast to visit colonial American historic sites, the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, and his beloved home town of Webster, New York. He especially enjoyed visiting historic forts and used book stores.

Barry will be remembered as a loving husband and father, and as a gentleman and scholar. He is survived by his wife Carolyn Beucler Martin, his son Shawn Martin, his daughter Melissa Peña, his grandson Xander Peña, and his daughter-in-law Amy Logsdon.

A memorial service will occur in the future.
