At age 84, Arlene passed away peacefully on May 23, 2012 in Sacramento. A native Sacramentan, Arlene lived in several cities in California and Washtington before settling in Rancho Cordova in the late 1970's. She now rejoins her husband, the late Mark P. Matulich Jr., and her sons the late Mark P. Matulich III and the late Gerard Matulich. She is survived by her sons Joseph (Sally) Matulich of Napa and Jeffrey Matulich of Rancho Cordova as well as her daughters Marlene (Elmer) Kliewer of Madera, CA and Mary (Jim) English of Carmichael. Arlene leaves behind 8 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, as well as many beloved nieces and nephews. Besides being a devoted wife and mother, Arlene worked in retail sales as a bridal consultant and real estate agent before her retirement. She was the last surviving of six children born to Arthur J. Atherton and Carolyn S. Atherton. The Athertons moved to Sacramento from Lincoln in 1926. They saw many changes in Sacramento, through the 'Great Depression', several wars, man walking on the moon and into the 21st Century. Now it is for us, the next generations, to carry them in our hearts well into the newer Century and remember them to our children and our children's children. May God rest their souls.
