Mary died Friday, March 8, at the San Carlos home of her son Steve and daughter-in-law Kathy, who lovingly cared for her in her final years. She was 95. In addition to Steve and Kathy, she is survived by her son Clayton and his wife Beth, her daughter Nancy Pape and her grandchildren David Pape, Erica Plumb, Stephanie Pape and Arden Plumb. She was preceded in death by her son-in-law Jim Plumb. Mary was born Aug. 19, 1917, in San Francisco of Irish descent. She married Clayton Pape 71 years ago. She was a member of the Native Daughters of the Golden West for over 50 years and a past president of Menlo parlor. Mary was an elegant woman with a great sense of style and a wicked sense of humor. She was always up for a cocktail and an adventure. Despite her declining health, her mind remained as sharp as ever, and she could still beat her family members at Rummikub. Two weeks ago, she got out of bed for the last time to watch the Oscars on TV. "Let's liven this party up," she said, calling for champagne. Her family would like to thank her caregiver and companion, Francesca, who took excellent care of Mary. A service to celebrate her life will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 14, at East Lawn Memorial Park, 4300 Folsom Blvd., Sacramento.
