Sister Mary St. John Hall died peacefully at Our Lady of Mercy Convent, Auburn on June 8, 2013. A native of Sacramento, she was born on July 27, 1929 to the late John and Mary (Dillon) Hall. She entered the Sisters of Mercy on August 15, 1955 and professed final vows on May 30, 1963. After graduating from St. Joseph Academy, she attended Sacramento Junior College taking mostly business classes. She was hired as a secretary at the Chancery Office of the Diocese of Sacramento in 1947, eventually becoming secretary to Bishop Robert Armstrong until 1955. She received a BS degree in Business Administration from the University of San Francisco in 1966 and an MA in Health Care Administration from St. Louis University in 1968. She spent her entire religious life in health care ministry serving many times in roles of leadership including: Associate Administrator at Mercy General Hospital, Sacramento from 1968-76; administrator at Mercy San Juan Hospital, Carmichael, 1976-86; CEO of Mercy McMahon from 1991-2000. She served concurrently as a member of the Sisters of Mercy General Council from 1968-74 and as Assistant to the President of the Sisters of Mercy from 1986-90. She served on Mercy Foundation Board as well as a number of hospital boards. She was preceded in death by her sister, Anna Mary, and brother, John. Survivors include cousins: Sister Jeremy Carmody, OP, Reno, Mary Ellen Masters, Sacramento, the Malone family in Ireland, close friends and her religious community. Friends were welcomed for visitation at W.F. Gormley & Sons Chapel, 2015 Capitol Avenue, Sacramento on June 12, 2013 from 4:00pm until the Vigil Service at 6:00pm. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at 11:00am on June 13, 2013 at Sacred Heart Church, 1040 39th Street, Sacramento. Burial will be at St. Mary Cemetery.
