They were transferred to Resaca Elementary; attended Junior High and Brownsville High School. As a child, Mirtala was always surrounded by close friends and carried those friendships throughout her life. To family and friends she was known as a person who loved to dance and have fun. On June 5, 1952 when she was inducted into the Marine Corps, it was the first ceremony of its type in the Southwest. Mirtala was in the group five (four from Brownsville and one from Mercedes) that became known as the largest number of Women Marines to be enlisted at one time in any city since World War II. That same day she was sent to Parris Island, South Carolina for boot camp. After boot camp she was stationed at Marine Corp Air Station (MCAS), El Toro in Santa Ana, California. She was hardworking and met each challenge with determination and vigor. While raising her children she attended Texas Southmost College earning a degree in Business Administration and furthered her education earning several other degrees. Mirtala lived in New York and Florida before settling down in California where she resided until her death. She worked as a waitress for the Dunfey Hotel until her retirement and was a member of the Bartenders and Culinary Workers Union. Mirtala moved to her new home where there is no more pain, no more sorrows and no more tears. She is now reunited and rejoicing with her daughter Vicky, her mother Eduviges; father, Angel ; brother-in-law, Ben Garza; husbands, Robert Wofford and Joe Lisanti and all the relatives that have preceded her in death.
