Ralph M. Scurfield

August 20, 1928 — October 15, 2013

Ralph M. Scurfield

Ralph lived life fully and endeared himself to many with his affable nature and quick wit. A tough but fair and honest businessman with a long history of service to his community. He was a member of the Sacramento City Council, Sacramento Redevelopment Agency, Sacramento Planning Commission, and Sacramento Trust for Historic Preservation. He served as chair of the Cal Expo Board, chair of the California Horse Racing Board, and President of Racing Commission International (RCI). In his early professional life he worked with his father operating the family business, Janak & Scurfield. He then enjoyed a successful career in Commercial Real Estate Development and Investment as Partner in the firm of Potter, Taylor & Scurfield and later President of The Scurfield Company and was directly involved in the redevelopment of Old Sacramento and development of the California State Railroad Museum. Ralph was a life long athlete playing basketball at Sacramento City College and McClatchy High School and later golf at San Jose State. Tennis and golf became his passions during his career and retirement. He spent time daily with his pals on the courts of Sutter Lawn Tennis Club and the courses of Del Paso and Thunderbird Country Clubs. He was an avid fly fisherman enjoying numerous trips with family and friends to the Klamath and Madison Rivers. An irreplaceable husband, father, grandfather and friend, Ralph is survived by his wife Barbara, sons Donald (Trish), David (Mary) and Steven, and stepsons Ken (MaryBeth) and Chris (Stacey) Griggs and his 14 very special grandchildren. Family and friends were invited to a Celebration of his Life at Sutter Lawn Tennis Club, 3951 N Street, at 1:00pm, on October 22, 2013 (casual attire).
