Margaret Swift Carroll

Margaret passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on December 15, 2013 at the age of 99. She was born in Seattle, Washington on February 10, 1914 to Paul L. and Mary Alice Dies. Margaret married her high school sweetheart, Elmer Rush. They had two sons James and Jerrald. After many years, the marriage ended. She was living in Sacramento and working for the military packing survival gear when she met Oliver J. Carroll, Jr.; a returning POW. It was love at first sight. They were married in 1948 and moved into a home they built in Mills, CA which is now Rancho Cordova. Their daughter, Melanie, was born the next year. Oliver returned to the military during the Korean War and was stationed at many military bases throughout the years including Goose Bay, Labrador and Aberdeen, MD where their son, Bruce, was born. In between these stations, they would return to Sacramento where they finally retired in the mid-sixties. Margaret enjoyed a lifetime connection with music, playing the piano, ukulele, and banjo by ear and even played them until the time of her death. She enjoyed all types of music, going to the Sacramento Jazz Festival and the Music Circus over the years. At the Music Circus, she was known to sing along with the performers loud enough to be heard by many. She was a member of the Williamsburg, Virginia chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Campus Commons Red Hat Society in Sacramento. Her family hereditary lineage is made up of interesting historical ancestors dating back to Charlemagne, and is part of our American History. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Oliver J. Carroll, Jr; son James Leland Carroll; sister Dorothy Amanda Winn and niece Paula Winn Oates. She is survived by her son Jerrald (Penny) of Sacramento, daughter Melanie Platte (Jeffrey) of Williamsburg, VA, son Bruce, of Etna, CA; granddaughters Mary Carroll, Tresa Duckworth, Staci Filer, Melissa O'Daniel, Amy Platte and Michelle Carroll; grandsons Andrew Platte, Calvin Meadows, Ian DeVries, Mustafa Carroll, Oliver Carroll; great granddaughter Tanya Filer; great grandsons Justin Filer, Noah Woodworth, Connor Platte, Adam Woodworth, Alex Platte and great-great grandson Braydon Bennett. She is also survived by her nephew, Richard Winn and grandniece Nicki Winn and grandnephew Joshua Winn. Margaret was laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia on January 22, 2014. In lieu of flowers, remembrances in her name may be made to the Fisher House Foundation, 111 Rockville Pike, Suite 420, Rockville, MD 20850 (www.fisherhouse.org) or to a charity of your choice.
