Stephen M. Slattery, a distinguished Vietnam-decorated Army veteran whose career took him and his family around the world, passed away at Napa's VA facility on February 14th, 2014, surrounded by a caring support staff. Born in Worcester, MA October 26, 1938, Stephen was the only child of James and Viola Slattery. He grew up in Hopewell, VA then attended Virginia Military Institute, graduating in 1960 when he preceded directly to service. Stephen married Sacramento native Teresa Burich in Illesheim Germany,where he was stationed and where she was teaching on base. His years of service included locales such as Ft. Ord, CA--where son Mike and daughter Anne were born-- a tour of Vietnam,Arizona, Libya, Indonesia, and many places in between before settling in Sacramento in 1978. Stephen's passion for all things military were reflected in his associations: Member of Reserve Officers Association of the United States, U.S. Army First Infantry Division, and Bishop Manogue Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus. In his retirement years, Stephen explored his affinity for all thing Irish-- making trips to Ireland for continued history education at Trinity College, retracing family roots, and attending local Irish festivals in Sacramento. Stephen is survived by wife Carol Marsack, son Mike Slattery, daughter Anne Hewitt, son-in-law David Hewitt, and grandchildren Carson and Jacob Hewitt. Friends are welcome to attend graveside services at Calvary Cemetery on Wednesday, February 26th at 1:30pm. In memory of Stephen's devout Irish heritage a celebration will ensue at de Vere's Irish pub at 15th & L St. downtown.
