(Mama Lena) Born December 4, 1916 in Armstrong Co. Pa., Lena died peacefully May 5th. She was preceded in death by husband Willard, daughter Anita, and six siblings; Betty, Virginia, Rose, Mary, Mamie, Bill and Homer. She is survived by daughter Kathryn & life partner Joan, son Homer & wife Ellen, grandchildren Jeannine, Kathy, Joseph, and Celine, 9 great grandchildren, and precious nieces & nephews. A coal miner's daughter from Pittsburgh, Pa., she moved to Philadelphia with her husband to raise their children and pursue a food service career. Lena and Willard retired in Edgewater Florida. After her husband's death, Lena spent the next 35 years living independently, with family and close friends near by. Comfortable with neighbors and politicians alike, she volunteered her time at Edgewater City Hall and the Elementary School, and was an active member of her parish at St. Gerard's Mission and Sacred Heart Churches. Ever conscious of her health, she enjoyed water aerobics, and long walks. A breast cancer survivor, Lena boasted three Sacramento "Race for the Cure" medals. She eventually moved to Sacramento, where her daughter sustained, the care that began by her son on the east coast. When the need for advanced care escalated, Lena became a part of the "Primrose Assisted Living" family, as their little Italian "Mama Lena" too. Donations can be made in her name to the Sacramento Komen Foundation. A private memorial will be scheduled at a later date.
