HAMMER, Jr., Thomas Jacob 81, of Sacramento, son of Thomas Jacob Hammer, Sr. and Daisy Irene Flippen Hammer. Tom was born on December 13, 1932 in Birmingham, Alabama and died on December 1, 2014 in Sacramento, California. Tom graduated from McClatchy High School in 1951, from the University of California at Berkeley in 1955, and from UC's Boalt Hall School of Law in 1960. Admitted to the bar in California in 1961, Tom practiced law from 1961-1986. Tom proudly served his country as a counter intelligence officer with the US Army from 1955-1957. In 1965 Tom became co-owner, with his brother-in-law Gordon MacAulay, of Shasta Linen Supply in Sacramento. He was Chairman of the Board of that Company at the time of his death and provided leadership at the local and national levels with the Textile Rental Services Association and Western Textile Services Association. Tom was deeply involved in all manner of organizations and entities serving the people of Sacramento and California. Tom was an active member and President of the Downtown Rotary Club of Sacramento; he was a member and President of the Sacramento Pioneers Association, Director of the Sacramento Trust for Historic Preservation and Director and President of the Sacramento History Museum Association, which organized to build the Sacramento City-County History Museum. He served as Chair of the Sacramento Charter Commission and as Chair of the California History Commission. Tom served as a longtime Director of A. Teichert and Son of Sacramento and as a Director of the El Dorado Savings Bank. He served as a Trustee and Chair of Mercy Hospital of Sacramento and as a Director and President of Mercy Hospitals Foundation. Tom lectured at CSUS in courses relating to Conservation Legislation, State and National Park Systems, the American Wilderness and the Economics of Outdoor Recreation. He was an avid backpacker, decades long distance runner and world traveler. Tom is survived by his wife of 60 years, Phyllis MacAulay Hammer and by four daughters: Tanis McGregor (Bill) of Los Angeles, Dayna Joonas (Ikbal) of Mauritius, Noel Richardson (Paul) and Katie Brown (Toran) both of Sacramento; and by 12 grandchildren: Will, Jake, Justine, Anissa, Alia, Hyder, Arianna, Chloe, Thomas, MacAulay, Taber, Emma-Kate; and a step-grandaughter: Jessie. Tom leaves behind a sister, Joanne Sheehy (Bryant), a brother Donald, a sister-in-law Barbara Ore and a brother-in-law Gordon MacAulay (Jeannie), all of Sacramento, and 10 nieces and nephews . The Hammer family extends their gratitude to the following caregivers for their wonderful care of Tom during his last days: Rose, Latte, Paula, Joe and John, and Sutter Hospice. A private family service will be held. The Hammer Family invites you to a reception in Tom's honor at the Sutter Club, 1220 9th Street, in Sacramento, on December 19 from 4 to 6 pm.
