EVRIGENIS, John B., MD It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. John B. Evrigenis, beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend, on March 22, 2015 after a valiant battle with congestive heart failure. Born February 23, 1925, in Thebes, Greece, to Vasilios and Maria Evrigenis, John attended schools in Athens and graduated from the University of Athens Medical School prior to immigrating to the United States in 1951 where he furthered his medical studies at the University of Oregon. He adapted quickly, educating himself in the idioms and nuances of the English language and customs of American culture. A year later he met and married the lovely Sophia Goritsan of Portland, Oregon. John and Sophia welcomed their first two children in Portland, followed by the births of their two sons in Sacramento where John began a thriving OB/GYN practice. In his professional life, Dr. Evrigenis quickly endeared himself to the Sacramento community. In all, he delivered 4,415 babies. His compassion for his patients and families was boundless, and he took great pride and joy in each child he delivered, meticulously chronicling details of every birth. He was highly esteemed by the medical community, and his legacy will live on through the many lives he ushered into our world. John was also a Fellow in the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology and a former President of the Northern California OB/GYN Society. In addition to his professional medical affiliations, John was a member of many service organizations, including the Masons, Shriners, Lions, and Rotary International. Additionally, he held memberships in the Sutter Club, Del Paso Country Club, North Ridge Country Club, and the Sacramento Club. Active in the Annunciation Greek Orthodox community, he served on the Parish Council and was a member of the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association, American Hellenic Professional Society, Dynamis and the Annunciation Senior League. John's boundless enthusiasm will forever be remembered as will his immense curiosity and insatiable appetite for knowledge. He was known not only as an esteemed physician, but as a top honors student who loved history, sports, language and trivia. He touched our lives in many wonderful ways, eternally an incredible force within his family and his community. Always the patriarch of his family, John is survived by his wife of 63 years, Sophia, and his 4 children Mary Ellen (George), Eleni Debbie (John), Greg (Danae), and Bill (Leah). He also leaves behind his 9 grandchildren (Yianni, Sophia, Dianna, Christina, Amelia, Maia, Demetra, John III and Alexandra), niece (Mary & Christo Nikolaou) and nephews (Chris Evrigenis and Vasilios & Toula Chronis) in Greece. John was preceded in death by his brother, Emmanuel, and his sister, Avghi Chronis. Friends and family are invited to attend the Trisagion Service to be held on Friday, March 27 at 6 pm, and the Funeral service to be held on Saturday, March 28 at 11 am-both at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 600 Alhambra Boulevard, Sacramento. Following the funeral, burial will be held at East Lawn Memorial Park, 4300 Folsom Boulevard.
