Elizabeth C. Lanphier Kiesel

(Betty aka Grammy) Betty Lanphier Kiesel passed away on December 25, 2015 in Carmichael, California. Born December 10, 1921 in Sacramento at the White Hospital, she was the daughter of the late Laura and Gordon Cherrill. She spent her early years and teens in Nevada, Oregon, Citrus Heights, Roseville, and Sacramento. Betty attended Sylvan Elementary School and graduated from San Juan High School, and continued her education at Sacramento Junior College (now Sacramento City College). Betty worked at McClellan Air Force Base during World War II, where she was crowned Miss McClellan AFB in 1941. In 1943 Betty married Albert J. Lazzarone of Sacramento. Betty and Al had a wonderful life together playing golf, traveling, watching baseball games, and generally living the "good life" that so many were a part of post-World War II. Sadly, Al Lazzarone passed away far too soon in 1969. Betty is the mother of Janet (Paul) Swanson of Rocklin and Gordon (Cathy) Lazzarone of Sacramento. She is also the grandmother of five granddaughters, Erin (Matthew) McGoldrick of Lincoln, Bretta (Matt) Hayes of San Diego, Maribeth (John) Hinton of Charlotte, North Carolina, Jenna Lazzarone, and Amanda Lazzarone of Sacramento. As soon as her first grandchild was born, she became known simply and affectionately as "Grammy" to her family. She was also blessed to be the great-grandmother of Jackson, Hannah, Mary, and Cal Hayes, Macey and Maggie McGoldrick, and Charity and Silas Hinton. Grammy also leaves a niece, Kathleen James Dautremont of Arroyo Grande, and two nephews, Bob and Michael Ricci of Sacramento. In 1976 Grammy married Joseph H. Lanphier, who preceded her in death in 1997. The family loved "papa Joe" and together he and Grammy enjoyed traveling the world and taking many wonderful trips, including several through North America. In 2005 she married Chester Kiesel, a retired career pilot in the US Air Force and a wonderful companion, who preceded her in death in 2010. Grammy was an avid reader and greatly enjoyed music, playing bridge and gin rummy, golf, traveling, gardening, Frank Sinatra and, most of all, her dearly-loved family and friends. Nothing in the world was more important to Grammy than her family to whom she was generous, always supportive, and beyond thrilled to be with. Grammy led by example and we are all better people having seen, and been the recipients of, her devotion and love for all of us. Additionally, Grammy was a past member of Sierra View Country Club and Del Paso Country Club, and a charter member of the Sutter Hospital Auxiliary (the Pink Ladies). Grammy had lived at Eskaton Village in Carmichael since 1992 where she was active in many clubs and charity events. At Grammy's request there will be a private family service. If you wish to honor her memory please make a donation in her name to the organization of your choosing.
