Bertha passed away peacefully in her sleep, at the age of 97, on January 23, 2016, in Sacramento.
She was born to Mary Ziehlsdorff Giese and Ferdinand G. Giese in Menominee, Michigan. Bertha moved to California as a young woman living for a time in the Bay Area. She then moved to Sacramento which became her permanent home. Bertha worked for the Boy Scouts of America and Mercy Hospital before moving to SMUD in the accounting department where she remained until she retired. Bertha was active in community activities. Volunteering at her church brought her great joy. She enjoyed opera, symphony, golf and travel. Her travels took her throughout the United States, to Asia, and Europe. Bertha was preceded in death by her husband Reuben.
She is survived by her son, Carl Nelson, daughters Patricia Woodring of Delaware, Alyce Nelson of Massachusetts, grandchildren Christopher and Cynthia Nelson, nephew Kenneth Giese of Colorado, nieces Joanne Bower, Jane Shaw of Wisconsin and Carolyn Hinton of Illinois.
Services were held Monday, February 1, 2016, at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, 7595 Center Parkway, Sacramento, at 12:00 noon, interment followed at East Lawn Cemetery, Elk Grove.
