Nancy Mcgrath

Nancy Alicia McGrath (AKA Ms. Ryan), entered into rest April 10, 2016. This amazing woman contracted polio only months before the vaccine was available. When most surrendered to the ravaging of the virus, she stood tall even though she was confined to a wheelchair for over 60 years. Against all odds, she obtained her teaching credential in 1962 and taught English to thousands of young people at Hiram Johnson H.S. and Sacramento City College. Her incredible humanity allowed her to change the lives of her students, her friends and her family. Her personal understanding of struggle and her empathy led her students to say, "Ms. McGrath makes everyone of us feel special." In 1975, she married her best friend and the love of her life Stan McGrath, who survives her. They traveled the world together and were married for 40 years. She was preceded in death by her beloved parents Doris and Matt Ryan. She leaves behind her loving brother Patrick (Betty) Ryan, her niece Katie (Rick) Lewis, nephew Matthew (Amy) Ryan, her grand-nephews Erik (Nikki) Lewis, Michael Lewis, Thomas Ryan and her grand-niece Kate Ryan, her step-daughter Kathleen McGrath and family, her relatives and friends from Sacramento and Amador counties. Her funeral mass will be held at Holy Spirit Church, Saturday, April 16, 2016 at 10:30 am., reception to follow.
