Robert M. Hocking
A quintessential gentleman, Robert “Bob” Hocking, died in his home surrounded by his loving family at the age of 91. A native of Sacramento and a pillar in the community, he was dedicated and devoted to his family and friends.
Survived by his loving wife Loretta whom he shared a profound love that deepened over the 70 years of marriage. Survived by children; Doug (Marie), Barbara (Jerry, dec’d), Mary (Rocky), Bob, Jr. (Diane), Mimi (Eric) and Nancy (Mike). He was a proud grandpa of 24 grandchildren and 30 great grandchildren. Daughters Kathy (Andy) and Patty (Dan) preceded him in death. Survived by numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Bob began working for the State of California, Board of Equalization in June 1943 part-time while attending Sacramento State College. Just five months after starting work, he joined the U.S. Navy, went to sea, and participated in some of the heaviest fighting in World War II.
After the war, he returned to the State of California and worked for the Board as an internal auditor, retiring in 1985. He spent his summer vacations working at the California State Fair.
Bob played basketball on Sacramento State College’s first organized athletic team and went on to coach Catholic Youth Organization basketball at St. Mary’s. He coached little league and Babe Ruth baseball and was a friend and mentor to many young people. He was a Grand Knight and member of the Knights of Columbus Council 953 where he spent many years as their financial secretary. He served as treasurer for the River Park Neighborhood Association and was a member of the Dante Club and SIRS. He was a lifetime lover of sports, joined a health club at the age of 91 and played his last game of golf just weeks before his death. Services will be held on Friday, June 17, 2016, 11:00 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Church, 3263 1st Avenue, Sacramento. Private Burial to follow. In lieu of flowers, family requests donations be made to UCD Comprehensive Cancer (Leukemia) Research Center.
