Marvin R. Carey, Sr.

September 23, 1933-July 18, 2016

With his two dogs and his family at his bedside, Marvin Ray Carey, Sr. passed away peacefully Monday evening at his Arden home; the same property he resided for nearly 83 years.

Both of Portuguese decent, Marvin's mother and father, Francis Macedo and Manuel Carey, eventually migrated to California and married in 1918. Marvin was the youngest of three children. His sister, Carmen, was born in 1919 and brother, Claremont John "Jack," quickly followed in 1920. Thus, Marvin's birth in 1933 was a surprise for Manuel and Francis. Prior to his passing, Marvin was the last living member of his immediate family.

After eight years at Arden School, Marvin attended Grant Union High School where he would go on to graduate in 1952. While he spent most of his career in sales, Marvin reunited with his alma mater as he worked for nearly a decade at Arden School before retiring.

Marvin grew up on 20 acres where he raised chickens, rabbits, a milking cow, and a horse which he loved to ride. In 1952, Marvin was awarded an acre of the compound from his parents as a wedding gift along with his predeceased wife, Charlotte Walker Carey. In 1953 at the age of 20, Marvin and Charlotte welcomed their first child Alyse (DeFazio). The couple's next two children, Marvin, Jr. and Natalie (Cvitanov), were born in 1957 and 1958, respectively. Their final child, William, was born in 1960, however, unexpectedly passed three months later.

Marvin loved the outdoors. He was an avid pheasant hunter and always had a Brittany Spaniel hunting dog that he would personally train. He enjoyed fishing, camping, boating and could be seen towing a houseboat with his motorhome.

Marvin loved sports, more specifically boxing and football. He adored the San Francisco 49ers; a passion he shared with his second predeceased wife, Jo Ann Carey. He was notoriously spotted wearing 49er apparel. As his grandchildren matured and went off to college his 49er wardrobe was supplemented with Aggie, Banana Slug, Golden Bear, and USF Don gear. With two of his grandchildren marrying Wisconsin natives, his loyalty to his family proved to be stronger than his loyalty to the 49ers as he commonly sported Green Bay Packer caps.

Marvin is survived by his children Alyse (Michael DeFazio), Marvin, Jr. (Lisa Carey), and Natalie (Bob Cvitanov), and grandchildren Francesca (James Reinhard), Michael (Jessie DeFazio), Danielle, Andrew, Tyler, Spencer, Trenton, and Ellie.

A Rosary will be will be held on Friday, July 22nd at 7 pm at W F Gormley & Sons. The funeral Mass will follow on Saturday, July 23rd at 10 am at St. Ignatius Parish.
