John "Jack" M. Keating, Md

To argue with him was to love him...and he was so loved. After a lifetime of spirited engagement, John (Jack) Maurice Keating, MD, passed away on Thursday, October 27, 2016, at age 78. He is survived by Carol, his wife of 51 years; his irreverent children Ann Marie, Christine (Wolfgang), Kenneth (Danielle), Kathleen (Daniel), and Victoria (Shaun); and his grandchildren Keegan, Alyse, Elizabeth, Sofia, Janell, and Christopher. He is also survived by his brothers James (Jim) Keating (Charlyn) and Jerome (Jerry) Keating (Carolyn), and a close-knit network of cousins, nieces, nephews and other extended family, all of whom he loved dearly. Jack was born to Pauline Keating, RN, and James M. Keating, DDS, on June 28, 1938, at Mercy General Hospital. Destined for the medical profession, Jack started as a medical marvel when he contracted polio at a young age and survived relatively unscathed due to an experimental treatment. He graduated from Christian Brothers High School in 1956, having created lifelong friendships with many of his "brothers." After graduating from St. Mary's College in 1960, he received his medical degree from St. Louis University in 1964. Jack completed his internship at the Sacramento County Hospital. A year later, he served as commanding officer for his medical unit in Vietnam. After returning, he became the first pediatric resident at the new UC Davis Medical Center. He was a practicing pediatrician for 30+ years, caring passionately for as many kids as he could see - especially the underserved - and cementing his role as a children's health expert and advocate. He transitioned from private practice into managed care administration to further his ability to ensure those in need received comprehensive health care. He served as medical director for several companies, including Mercy Independent Practice Association and Foundation Health/Health Net. He most recently served as Chief Clinical Officer for River City Medical Group, working up until the week prior to his passing. Jack met Carol in 1964, the love of his life as well as his compassionate and intellectual match, and they were married within a year. Although they planned for a baker's dozen, they settled on a more reasonable brood of five. Together, they created the most loving home, encouraging intellectual discourse, drive and integrity in their children. To our Dad: Keep the campfire going and the table set, for as each of our times come, we'll be eager to find you and resume the conversation. Until then, know that we love you and miss you dearly. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, November 3, at 1:30 p.m. at the Elks Lodge #6 at 6446 Riverside Blvd, Sacramento. Remembrances may be made to Shriner's Hospital for Children or charity of your choice .
