George Charles Smith

George Smith was born in Chicago, Illinois on February 9, 1945 and died in the peace of Christ on December 20, 2016 at Kaiser Hospital in Roseville, California at age 71.  He was preceded in death by his wife Joan, and by his parents James and Ethel. He is survived by his sons Andrew (Amber) and David (Breanna), four grandchildren, and his wife Dorothy.

George retired from his job as a Senior Transportation Planner with the Department of Transportation (CALTRANS) in 2007, where he had served for 27 years.  Prior to State work, he served as a City Planner for Sacramento and San Diego.

A song always in his heart, George enjoyed playing his bass, guitar, piano, and many other instruments.  He enjoyed time with family and friends, serving his community, travel, and reading with a good pipe.  He believed in helping others, passing on a legacy of pride in ones work, and spreading peace and joy through song, love and laughter.  Challenged with complex health issues for years, he faced them with his usual grace, dignity and humor.  Throughout it all nothing dampened his generous spirit.

Viewing will begin at 6:30pm and the Vigil and Rosary beginning at 7:00pm on Friday, January 6, 2017, at St. Ignatius Loyola Parish, 3235 Arden Way, Sacramento, California, 95825.  Celebration of Life Mass will be held at the same location at 11:00am on Saturday, January 7, 2017, with a reception immediately following in the Parish Garden Room.  The Rite of Committal will take place later that same day at 2:00pm at Calvary Catholic Cemetery, 7101 Verner Ave., Citrus Heights, CA 95621 (Formerly Sacramento, CA. 95841).  In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the National Parkinson Foundation at Parkinson.org, or to the Multiple System Atrophy Coalition at www.multiplesystematrophy.org.
