Norman Joseph Lucas Ii

Lucas, Norman Joseph II
Norman J. Lucas, 67, a lifelong resident of Sacramento passed away suddenly on June 19th, 2017. Son of the late Norman and Marie Lucas.  He is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Sheila Lucas, son Aaron Brown (Kendra) of Sacramento, daughter Ajna Rae of Portland, grandchildren Cailin and Satya of Portland. Norm leaves behind his loving sister, Valerie Skinner-Cook, nephews Clint Skinner (Kelly), Ryan Skinner, and Niece Megan Perasso (Dustin). He is also survived by cousins Josette Halsted of Sacramento, Henry Ostoja, and Kathy Kelly of Jacksonville, FL, and Mary Jo Woods, of Dallas, Tx. Norm retired from a 39-year career as a conductor/brakeman with the railroad which began when he hired out as a Brakeman on the Sacramento Northern Railroad (SN). During his career with the SN he became interested in labor-management relations with the United Transportation Union (UTU). He served as its General Chairman for conductor, brakemen, and switchmen members. He represented these railroad employees through three railroad mergers: Sacramento Northern—Western Pacific, Western Pacific—Union Pacific, and the acquisition of the Southern Pacific by the Union Pacific. Norm also served as a UTU representative for the operating employees on the Central California Traction (CCT), Modesto and Empire Traction (M&ET), Tidewater Southern, and other San Joaquin Valley short line railroads. Norm was an active volunteer at the California State Railroad Museum, becoming a member of the SSRR  its first year of operation in 1984.  He served as a volunteer Brakeman, Conductor and Trainmaster.  In addition to these operating assignments, he was the Assistant General Manager of the SSRR. He was blessed with many wonderful friends and will be missed by all. His wit, humor, and compassion for others will never be forgotten. A memorial Mass will be held on June 30th, 2017 at Sacred Heart Church at 11am. Funeral arrangements by Gormley & Sons. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Prostate Cancer Foundation or the Sacramento Food Bank.
