A member of the greatest generation, Warren J. O’Connell, Sr., passed away in his sleep on July 14, 2017 after a brief illness at the home of his son Warren Jr. in Sacramento, CA. Born on December 8, 1920 he was a lifelong resident of Fall River, except for his time in the service and his move to CA in 2015.
The son of the late John O’Connell and Sarah (Loftus) O’Connell, he was the sixth of seven children: Edward (Mary) O’Connell, John O’Connell, William (Theresa) O’Connell, Sarah (Herb) Combs, and Ruth (Robert) Guldner, and Eileen O’Connell, who died in infancy.
He was raised in the Flint area of Fall River and was a graduate of B.M.C. Durfee High School. A WWII vet, he served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in New Guinea, being honorably discharged in 1946.
He married Annette Martel (deceased) of Fall River in June 1951 and had two sons, Warren J. (Janice) O’Connell Jr. of Sacramento, CA and Bruce M. (Madeline) O’Connell, a retired Fall River police sergeant. He was a devoted grandfather to Melissa O’Connell, Sean O’Connell, Kellie Goldfien, and Ryan O’Connell and great grandfather of four, and is survived by many nieces and nephews.
He worked for the Texaco Company at the oil terminal in Tiverton, RI for many years. A resident of Rockland Street for over 60 years, he was a longstanding parishioner of Saint Stanislaus Church and active in many activities there, including coaching CYO basketball and baseball. As a member of St. Stan’s Senior’s group, he enjoyed outings to Foxwoods, travelling, and making pierogies every week at the school. He was a recipient of the Marian Medal Award. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus.
Warren was quite active into his early 90’s and enjoyed frequent dancing, golfing, and bowling.
Visitation will be held in the Boule Funeral Home, 615 Broadway, Fall River, MA 02724 on Monday, July 24, 2017 from 4:00PM to 7:00PM, with a funeral Mass to be celebrated at St. Stanislaus Church on Tuesday, July 25, 2017 at 10:00AM, followed by interment at Notre Dame Cemetery.
