Born April 16, 1921, Ed left this world to be with the Lord early Sunday morning, September 3, 2017, just before the hour when he normally arose to participate in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass broadcast on EWTN at 5:00 a.m. Ed was the loving and devoted husband of Betty; they were married over sixty nine years before she passed on August 1, 2015. They are survived by their two daughters, Melissa Rooney, PhD, and Maria Rooney. Ed attended St. Francis Elementary School and McClatchy High School before attending college at UC Davis and graduating from UC Berkeley. He served in the US Navy during WWII. He was an owner of Rooney Brothers Inc. for fifty years and grew hops in the Sloughhouse area. He was a long time member of the Sutter Club. He was an avid baseball fan and ardent supporter of the San Francisco Giants. This past March he traveled to Arizona for Spring training-- especially to watch the Giants. Ed was a faith filled person who was devoted to our Blessed Mother. He and Betty were long time members of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, where they served as Eucharistic ministers. Each day he prayed the Holy Rosary and read the daily devotion from The Word Among Us. He made friends easily and enjoyed close friendships which spanned decades with Don Veninga, Joe Paglironi, and Jay Kent. He was thankful for the love of his niece, Jill McCalister, his godson Kevin Morley, and friends Steve Harrold and Frank and Trena Plavan. Those who knew him will miss his wonderful smile and eyes that would light up with laughter. The family and close friends wish to thank Monsignor Robert P. Walton and Father Michael Kiernan for their devotion and ministry. They are also thankful for the care and love of caregivers Donna Eaddy and Karalaini Rekailea. A funeral Mass will be held on September 15th at 11:00 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Memorial donations can be made to Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
