On August 30, in Sacramento, Rosemary Purtill passed away peacefully, aged 86. Born in New York City to John and Sarah DeSilva, Rosemary moved with her father to California around 1940 and lived in Oakland and Berkeley until moving to Sacramento with her husband and family in 1962, where she worked tirelessly to raise six children as well as work full time outside the home. Rosemary started in the early sixties as a billing clerk at Mercy Hospital and ultimately rose to become the secretary to the Controller, retiring after 33 years.
Her special gift for singing in all musical styles allowed her to bring joy to countless others over the years. She sang with the Sacramento Turnverein, the Sacramento Opera Chorus and in several Catholic parishes in the Sacramento Diocese, including the Schola Cantorum of Sacred Heart Church, and on one occasion sang for the Pope. She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Thomas Purtill, in 2011. She is survived by her children, Mark (Clare), Joan Lippi (Tom), Brian (Jymmey), David (Linda), Sara Ingalls (Tom), Susan Barnes (Joseph), twelve grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren.This site is protected by reCAPTCHA and the
