Sister Mary Caritas Cunningham
Sister Mary Caritas Cunningham died peacefully at Our Lady of Mercy Convent, Auburn, on November 17, 2017. A native of Mallow, County Cork, Ireland, she was the daughter of the late Daniel and Mary Cunningham. She entered the Sisters of Mercy in Auburn in 1962 and professed final vows in 1969. After completing her religious studies, she trained as a Licensed Vocation Nurse at Sacramento City College and spent forty years in various positions within the healthcare ministry: twelve years as a nurse at Mercy General Hospital, Sacramento and five years at Mercy San Juan Hospital, Carmichael; twenty years as support staff in Mission Services, Social Services and Pastoral Care at Mercy Care Convalescent and Mercy Rehabilitation Unit. She retired in 2008 but continued as a volunteer sacristan for the chapel at Mercy General, a position she filled until 2014. Due to declining health, she moved to the Sisters of Mercy Retirement Center, Auburn and continued with her prayer ministry. Known for her compassionate care and generous spirit, she was a tireless advocate on behalf of the sick and their families. She is survived by her brother, Cornelius and family, San Francisco; her family in County Cork, Ireland as well as her religious community. She was predeceased by her brother, Denis Cunningham and her sister Hannah O'Sullivan.
A vigil service will be held on Monday, Nov. 20 at 7:00 PM at Our Lady of Mercy Chapel, 535 Sacramento Street, Auburn.
Mass of Christian Burial will be on Tuesday, Nov. 21 at 10:30 AM at Our Lady of Mercy Chapel.
A reception will immediately follow the Mass.
Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery.
