Ruth Marion Reed

Ruth M. Reed (98) entered into rest on November 15, 2017. Born in Santa Rosa to John and Alice Nelson, the eldest of three children, she grew up in Sebastopol where her family farmed. After graduation from Analy High School, she moved to Sacramento and attended secretarial school. There she met George who courted her with his harmonica playing. They were married in 1941 and made their home in Sacramento. She and George were known for their love of extended family and became the heart of a large, close-knit Reed family, warmly hosting holiday events, summer barbeques, and family outings. She and George were also active in scouting and were proud that all three sons achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. Ruth was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother, and a faithful friend. She is survived by and will be deeply missed by her five children, Bretta (Tony), Nancy (Curt) McClusky, Don (Cristine), Art (Ma Huan), and Ken (Ellen), and 11 grandchildren, Kerry, Gina, Aimee, Justin, Jordan, Sara, Laura, Kevin, Scott, Breanna and Victoria. She is also survived by 11 great grandchildren, her sister-in-law Linda Reed, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, George (1971), and brothers, John and Allen. Ruth loved hiking, backpacking, camping, and gardening, and was able to participate in these activities into her mid 80's. She especially enjoyed traveling, both home and abroad, and was known to grab a backpack and sleeping bag and head off where the wind took her. After her children were grown she hosted many international students, and their families often returned the favor, hosting her for memorable trips to their home countries. In retirement, Ruth was a volunteer for Meals a la Car, and served as a deacon of Fremont Presbyterian Church. God, family, and friends were always central to Ruth's life.

A memorial service will be held at Fremont Presbyterian Church in Sacramento at a date to be chosen later.
