The long wonderful life of Kathryn Elizabeth “Betty” Downey came to an end on March 9, 2018 in her home of 65 years with family and friends by her side. She was born April 8, 1919 in Everett, WA one of three children of Henry A. Werner and Mabel McCann Werner. Her life was defined by family, faith, and friends. Betty was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years John F. “Jack” Downey (1991) managing partner of Downey Brand and their son Michael (1967). She is survived by 10 children; Barbara Rodda (Steven), Cindy Arndt (Denis), David (Melanie), Kathy (Jim), Steve, Eve Clavette (Jim), John (Carol), Richard, Tom (Amy), Dennis (Brooke), 11 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Betty and Jack first met in Alaska where Betty’s parents lived, and Jack was serving in the U.S. Army. Betty was visiting her parents and Jack was on an Army assignment. Jack was smitten and later pursued Betty to Washington D.C. where she was working for a U.S. Senator. She previously attended George Washington University. They were married in 1943 at Camp McKay in Wisconsin. After Jack returned from active duty in Europe (WWII) the two started a life together in Jack’s hometown Sacramento. Betty became “Mother Downey” as the family grew to 11 children. The home in Land Park was always busy with the children, friends and neighbors. Betty was the lead cheerleader for all the kids activities. It was an amazing experience for all. Betty’s Catholic faith was the foundation of her life. She was a member of Holy Spirit Parish since 1948, served as a Eucharistic minister and often walked to daily mass. As the children grew up, Betty turned to other avenues to stay busy. Always an active athlete she took up golf and was (along with Jack) a member of Valley High. She also contributed her skills to the community by serving on the Christian Brothers High School Board of Regents including a term as President, served on the Junior League and was an elected member of the Democratic Central Committee. Grandchildren came, and Mother Downey became “Bug” a name most knew her by these past nearly 40 years. She loved her babies! Everyone whose life she touched, including all the grandchildren, benefitted from her advice and wisdom. She was a great source of comfort and support. She would give it to you straight! Betty was a gracious hostess first with Jack and then after his passing on her own. She enjoyed frequent gatherings often in the back yard. Her circle of friends was multi-generational and very important to her long life. For many years she hosted a regular weekly confab with her “Learned Ladies” where important matters were discussed, birthdays and special occasions celebrated, and the wine flowed. Special occasion guests included Father Brady, Father O’Conner & Sister Catherine. Friends are welcome to attend a Memorial Mass, on Wednesday, March 14, at 11:00 AM, at Holy Spirit Church, 3159 Land Park Drive Sacramento. The family requests that any contributions be made to Holy Spirit School or the charity of your choice.
