Sister Janel Sawatzki, RSM (6/7/1929 4/16/2018) Sr. Janel Sawatzki, RSM (88) died peacefully on April 16 at Our Lady of Lourdes Care Center in Auburn CA. She was born in Omaha NE and there, in 1950 entered the Sisters of Mercy. For 35 years she taught in grade and high schools in various states but 21 of those years were spent as a teacher and an administrator at Mercy High School in Red Bluff. Although she often stated that working with students was her greatest joy in life, during her 68 years as a Sisters of Mercy, she also worked for 15 years as Associate Director of Home Help for Hispanic Mothers in Tehama County CA. She also ministered to adults, especially woman, offering retreats and special prayers for various groups and organizations. Besides her Mercy Community, she is survived by her sister Bette Frundt, Montclair New Jersey, sister-in-law Dolores Swatzki, of Thornton CO, many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers Sr. Janel requested that donations be sent to the Sisters of Mercy West Midwest Community in Omaha, Nebraska.
Services will held at Sacred Heart Church 515 Main St. Red Bluff, CA: Vigil Service Sunday May 6, at 7 pm and Mass of Christian Burial Monday May 7, at 11am.
Burial will be at St Mary's Cemetery in Red Bluff.
