Aug 23, 2018 Josette Janine Mietus, our beloved mother and grandmother, devoted daughter and wife, and dear friend, passed peacefully at 95 years of age in her Carmichael home with family at her side. Born a French citizen in Peking, China, the only child to Ulette and Elie Chaudoin, she grew up in Hankow's diverse international sector before the second world war. Her annual trips to visit family in southern France were full of magical memories, but abruptly ended from age 15 through 23 with the difficult Japanese occupation of China throughout World War II. After the war, Josette met the love of her life and husband of 59 years, Norbert Mietus, an officer in the Navy in the Pacific campaign who extended his service working for the US Consulate in Shanghai, and who would always say he had to go all the way to China to find Josette. Josette left Asia for America in 1945 to marry and raise a family, taking on a new country and myriad new roles and challenges with courage, never looking back. Accomplished seamstress, French chef, avid reader, pro bono legal secretary for her husband who partnered on the publication of several successful textbooks, talented artist, amazing knitter, bridge player, crossword puzzle master and source of unconditional love, her joie de vivre and generosity were a gift for all who entered her light. This remarkable woman answered a call from God with the clarity and grace that defined her life. Lucid to the end, she understood with a deep wisdom that her time had come. Mortal parts were worn thin and this earth-bound body could no longer contain her vibrant spirit. Her final words were loving and kind to family surrounding her. She expressed deep gratitude to her friends and to the compassionate skilled nursing staff who have supported her on this final leg of the journey. As was long her wish and prayer, she fell into a deep sleep from which she awoke on the other side in peace, light and reconnection with her husband Norbert. He has been very patient while we cherished Josette in our midst.
She is survived by sons, Christopher and Alan, and his wife Julie; daughter, Michele, preceded by son-in-law John, and survived by seven cherished grandchildren, John, Jacqueline, Michael, Matthew, Noelle, Meghan, and Gregory, and granddaughter-in-law Erin.
Josette cared deeply for those less fortunate than herself and believed in the liberating power of education. If desired, a memorial gift may be made online to Sacramento Food Bank and Family Services at support.sacramentofoodbank.org/give/137342/#!/donation/checkout or by check to the Capitol Building Fund for the new Elementary School at St. Ignatius Parish (address below), where her children and Sacramento grandchildren all began their educations.
