Ms. Betty Lou Herold passed away August 15, 2018, at the age of 87 in Sacramento, CA. Born in Frankfort, Indiana to Forrest and Virginia McCord on May 14, 1931, Betty grew up with her siblings, Rosemary, Phyllis, Nancy, Janet, and Dick. She married Professor Curtis Paul Herold (died 1990) on June 3, 1956 in Muncie, Indiana. They moved to California in 1958 and had two children, Charles and Kathryn. In the early 1970s, when many women were still content to be housewives, Betty chose to pursue a degree in Social Work, first taking night courses at American River College and later transferring to Sacramento State College. She then worked for 10 years in the home health care industry, retiring in 1985. Betty spent her free time gardening and perfecting her home. Over the decades she chose furniture, wall paper, carpets, artwork, trees and flowers that expressed her personality as though the house and yards were an artist's single canvas. She loved watching the wind blow through her trees and kept an eye out for the squirrels and hummingbirds in the back yard. A life-long Democrat and a strong feminist, Betty voted for Hillary Clinton for president when she was the nominee in 2016 and when she wasn't in 2008. She spent much of the last two years watching MSNBC, furious at that "awful man" who stole the election.
A private memorial for Betty is taking place at her home this Labor Day from 10 a.m to noon. Those wishing to make a donation in her name may choose from her two favorite charity organizations: the Sacramento SPCA or the Salvation Army.
